What Is The RPL Report And Why Is It Required For Australian Immigration?

THE DEMAND OF ICT PROFESSIONALS IN AUSTRALIA

ICT or Information and Computer Technology is the pillar of economic growth of a country. It results in improved quality of life, innovative advancements and easy workflow in organizations. Recent reports by the Australian Computer Society (ACS) reveal that by 2024, Australia requires more than 100,000 employees in the ICT field. This means people in the ICT sector have a fair chance to migrate to this country and find better career opportunities.

RPL REPORT REQUIREMENT FOR AUSTRALIA IMMIGRATION

As the country demands ICT professionals, it also expects them to have a certain skill-set so that they can be an asset to the ICT industry. Hence, the ACS or Australian Computer Society conducts a skill assessment of every applicant who wants to migrate to Australia.

In this assessment, the ICT professionals from all across the world, with or without an ICT degree or qualification can showcase their ICT skills and hence find a way to Australia. The ICT professionals who do not have a formal ICT qualification or have an insufficient ICT qualification have to submit an RPL Report or Recognition to Prior Learning Report. This document demonstrates their ICT skills to ACS.

RPL SKILLS ASSESSMENT CATEGORIES

ACS describes two kinds of applicants that are required to submit an RPL report. Both the type of applicants must nominate an occupation listed by ANZSCO.

Category 1: Applicant who has a non-ICT Qualification with a minimum of 6 years of work experience in the ICT field for the occupation that they nominate.

Category 2: Applicant who does not have a tertiary qualification with a minimum of 8 years of work experience in the nominated occupation. The additional 2 years of work experience need not be from the nominated ANZSCO code.

ACS RPL FORMAT

RPL for Australia immigration is a standard document. Hence, the ACS has prescribed a format for the document. Every applicant must ensure that they prepare the report as per the format. The RPL document comprises two sections –

SECTION 1: Key Areas of Knowledge

The key areas of knowledge are divided into two categories:
Essential Core ICT Knowledge

The Essential Core ICT Knowledge includes two topics that every ICT professional must possess:

Topic 1: ICT professional knowledge

Topic 2: ICT problem-solving skills

General ICT Knowledge

General ICT knowledge includes topics that provide general information about the ICT industry:

Topic 1: Technology Resources

Topic 2: Technology Building

Topic 3: ICT Management

For each of these topics, the ACS has defined further subtopics. An applicant has to select 1 topic each from Essential Core ICT Knowledge and General ICT Knowledge. For each of those topics, they need to address at least 2 subtopics.

SECTION 2: The Project Report Forms

Applicants have to submit 2 project reports in the RPL report. These project reports demonstrate how the applicant performed as an ICT professional in their job. Through these reports, the applicant has to reflect on how they implemented the key areas of knowledge in the ICT field. The length of the project reports must be four or five pages only.

One of the projects must be undertaken in the past three years and the other can be from the past five years. The ICT defined certain factors that applicants can include in their project reports such as System Analysis and Design, Programming paradigms, Network topologies, Project management, ICT managerial activities etc. ACS provides the complete template for the project reports.

You need a strategy – If you are thinking of just taking a day from your busy schedule to prepare your RPL report then you must think again. You need a proper strategy for preparing an RPL report. You need time to research. You need to understand the RPL assessment guidelines by ACS. You need to pick up relevant projects. All this requires time and attention.

RPL and CDR are two different documents – Many applicants get confused between RPL and CDR. They often interchange their formats or mix one format with another. All this can lead to the rejection of the report. So, please ensure that you understand the difference between these two reports. Both of them are used for Migration Skills Assessment but CDR is prepared by Engineers while RPL is prepared by ICT professionals.

Project reports should be genuine – You would have got a clear idea about the format of the project report. As you can see, the report requires in-depth clarity about the projects. So make sure you are providing something that is genuine so that you can provide the explanations for the same easily. You may refer to a few RPL samples for clarity on how to prepare the project reports.

ANZSCO code must be correct – The ANZSCO provides the complete list of occupations along with the job duties and responsibilities. Read them carefully and nominate the occupation that matches closely with your job. Choosing an incorrect occupation code would indeed lead to incorrect RPL report.
